Graphic Novel Glossary

Page: A Collection of Panels on one sheet of paper.

Panel: Each divided section of a page containing it's own image and/or text.

Gutter: The (usually white) space that divides the panels on a page.

Speech Bubble: Dialogue spoken by a character that is typically drawn to appear as though it is coming from that person.

Thought Bubble: Thoughts/feelings from a character, usually appearing as either a cloud or square colored box.

Writer: The person who writes the script, dialogue, and does some of the layout work on a comic book/graphic novel.
Penciller: The person who drafts out the images on each page, usually in pencil. The finished project is essentially line drawings.
Inker: The person who goes over the penciller's drawings in ink, adding shading and depth, and correcting any mistakes made by the penciller.
Colorist: The person who goes in and paints the Inker's final product, adding colors and additional shading/depth where necessary.
Letterer: The person who adds in text bubbles, thought bubbles, and anything that is overlaid on the original artwork. They also write the text in the overlaid boxes.
