Cheng's first book explores the relationship that grows between biracial Helen and Gong Gong, her grandfather, when he come from China to live with her family. Zhang's acrylic illustrations are soft and comforting as a warm blanket.

She goes to Chinese school on Saturdays and she is nervously awaiting the arrival of relatives who are coming over from China. This is the first in what is sure to be a series.

Basic introduction to the life and writings of Laurence Yep. Dr. Yep has a PhD, writes books for young people, and teaches English.

Billy Wong from Arizona was a well-known bullfighter in Spain. Billy's father had always told him, he could be anything he wanted. On a trip to Spain, Billy saw a bullfight. He quit his job and began training. The early illustrations look like old sepia photographs but become quite vivid in Spain.

Simple verse introduces colors and various Chinese and (some worldwide) items. Lin's illustrations are bold and lively.

Wong, Janet S. Apple pie 4th of July / Janet S. Wong ; pictures by Margaret Chodos-Irvine. San Diego : Harcourt, c2002. Ages 4-8.

Simple tale of a girl spending the 4th of July in her parents store. She worries that no one will want to eat Chinese food on an American holiday.

Wong, Janet S. This next New Year / Janet S. Wong ; pictures by Yangsook Choi. New York : Frances Foster Books, 2000. Ages 2-8.

Chinese/Korean American family celebrates the Lunar New Year. An author's note explains the significance of such new years traditions as tangerines, peaches, and fish. Tries a little hard in celebrating multiculturalism in the beginning, but the simple text is poetic and expresses a small boys hopes and dreams. The less realistic of Choi's illustrations are the most enjoyable.

It is perfect pool side reading.

Pre-teen girl stays with her grandma in San Francisco 's Chinatown, while her father deals with his gambling problem. She learns something about her culture and Chinese language.

Paw Paw tells her grandson about her great-grandfather and his brother who worked as coolies building the transcontinental railroad.

Zhang, Song Nan. A little tiger in the Chinese night : an autobiography in art / Song Nan Zhang. Montreal, Quebec ; Plattsburgh, N.Y. : Tundra Books, c1993. Ages 10+.

An autobiography of a mainland Chinese artist. Born during the Japanese occupation, he survived the cultural revolution and after Tiananmen brought his family to Canada.
