Monkey

Another famous trickster is Monkey from India. He loves to taunt the crocodiles. Many of the tales involve crocodile plotting to catch Monkey, and Monkey tricking crocodile into letting him go. Much like Wiley Coyote and Road Runner, the crocodile never wins.

Crocodile offers to take Monkey on his back to the island where the fruit trees grow. Crocodile then tries to drown Monkey and eat him. Monkey tells crocodile that it's too bad he didn’t bring his heart with him. When Monkey reassures crocodile that his heart is the tastiest part of him, crocodile swims back toward land.

Monkey decided that he had better get away from crocodile for a while, so Monkey moves down the river to another tree. Then one day crocodile swam farther down the river than he usually did, and what did he see? His favorite Monkey! He watched Monkey jump from rock to rock to get to the island where the fruit trees grow.

Crocodile thought to himself that if he lays really still like a rock, Monkey will jump on him and he will at last get to catch Monkey. Just as Monkey is about to land on crocodile, he notices the rock is bigger than usual. He realizes it's crocodile, and decided to trick him again.

He calls, "Hello, Rock."

Of course, there is no answer.

Monkey calls again with no response. Monkey things out loud, "That's funny. My rock doesn't seem to be talking to me tonight. I hope nothing is wrong."

Crocodile hears Monkey and thinks to himself, Why, this rock must talk to the monkey. If he calls again, I'll have to answer.

When Monkey calls again, crocodile answers, "Hello, Monkey!"

Monkey answers, "Crocodile, is that you lying on my rock?"

"Yes, I am waiting to eat you."

Monkey answers, "I guess there's no hope for me. You might as well just open your mouth and I'll jump right in."

Monkey knew that when crocodiles open their mouths wide, their eyes shut tight. So when Monkey jumped, he jumped over crocodile's mouth, landed on crocodile's back, on to the riverbank and up to the top of his tree.

Crocodile conceded that Monkey is quicker and more clever and said he will leave Monkey alone.

Monkey answered, "I will always be watching for you anyway."

And that is why crocodiles and monkeys have never been friends.(Baugartner)
