Evaluating your finished program serves
multiple functional purposes for yourself, and for your library.
Keeping track of statistics can justify to your library director, as
well as community, of the purpose and importance of alternative
programming. Evaluating the program can also help you as a librarian
gage what was well received by your user population, as well as what
was not well-liked. Evaluation can also generate ideas for further
programming, or "tweaks" to current programs.
Below are some tips for evaluating a finished
program:
•Keep attendance statistics for programs, and keep
track of them through the year. This can help you plan future
events by knowing which were a success in the past, as well as plan
other logistics, like what time of the day, and which day of the week
are best for your patrons to attend the program.
•Write up your own summary of the program,
in addition to keeping statistics. This can be easily integrated
into an annual report for your library, or be used to submit an article
for a professional journal. Don't forget to include positive
anecdotes--often times these are more touching and prove the worth of
programming more than numbers and statistics can.
•Distribute a quick
evaluation form for attendants to fill out at the end of the program.
Giving this out at the end of the program will get fresh feedback from
attendants, as well as helpful criticism. Don't forget to keep these
available at the Reference Desk for those who slipped away without
filling out the form, and drop by the library later on. Make your
contact information available to attendants, to keep open lines of
communication.
•Plan a follow-up meeting with your
collaborators. If you planned or conducted your program with
another person or organization, plan to meet and discuss the results of
the program. This can be a great way to get another perspective and
more ideas about future programs. Also make sure to thank those who've
helped you plan your program!
