While many ABC books focus on scenes in nature there are several innovative looks at cities. First show children more traditional ABC books with nature-based themes. Then take plenty of time to look through books like Zoran Milich's The City ABC Book and Debora Pearson's Alphabeep: A Zipping, Zooming ABC. Compare and contrast the differences between both sets of books. Discuss which books look more like where they live.
Building
Use an ABC books about architecture as a prompt for an alphabet city. Gather whatever building materials you have access to and leave them out for children to build with as you're reading. Then set up different construction zones. Have Legos on the floor, sugar cubes on a table, and cards on another. Challenge them to build structures that look like letters.
