Photography Activities
Hidden Images
Use Zoran Milich's The City ABC Book as a prompt for looking deeper into photographs. Look through books and magazines trying to discover other objects in each picture, just like looking for images in the clouds. Then take digital pictures around the neighborhood, library, or school of ordinary scenes. Take another look at the pictures to see what has been hidden in the photograph taken.
Fun with Photos
Sheila Moxley's An Alphabet Book of Cats and Dogs takes photographs of dogs and cats and pastes them into absurd illustrations. Have children bring in photos of animals and people. Younger children can cut the faces out and draw a picture around it, while older children can experiment with computer programs like Photoshop to change the original look of a photograph.
Photo Alphabet
Challenge children to make an alphabet book with no text using only photographs with a Polaroid camera. They could take pictures of letters found in signs or experiment with people using their bodies to create letters.
